Growing the game takes more than tuning in to watch your favorite team on television. While soccer is wonderful however you consume it, nothing compares to the match day atmosphere of your local club. Across the United States, grassroots soccer is exploding like never before thanks to success stories like Minnesota United FC and FC Cincinnati. From humble beginnings, both franchises have risen to the top of the US Soccer pyramid, showing that when the passionate fans of a small team shoot for the moon, they just might hit it.
What’s the lesson here? Support local. The game can’t grow without fans tending to its roots.
Few communities have embraced this motto like the people of Detroit, Michigan. Built on resilience and kept alive by hope, Motor City is home to one of America’s most exciting soccer cultures.
Since 2012, Detroit City FC have proudly represented their city on the pitch. The club motto tells you all you need to know about the organization’s goals: “Passion for our city. Passion for the game.” This passion has propelled the team to a fantastic start to existence, including an NISA league title in the 2020-21 season.
While success on the field has been a staple of DCFC’s short history, it’s what they do off the field that really matters. Just as the community supports the club, this club supports its community.
In 2014, Detroit City FC announced its first fall recreational adult soccer league, called Soktoberfest. Since then, they have continued to run adult recreational leagues, as well as free youth soccer clinics with Think Detroit PAL. Each season, they use one home match to raise money for a Detroit-based charity. On top of all that, they foster the growth of high school soccer in the area, help combat hunger in the Detroit metropolitan area, and are advocates for the LGBTQ+ community.
Regardless of the league they play in or their results on the field, this club is a positive part of the community that built it.
When you support local, you can be a part of real, tangible change. Proper support extends far beyond the pitch, and Detroit City FC are a prime example of the impact the beautiful game can have on a world in need.
